[Clinton, N.C.]– On Saturday, February 22, Sampson Community College (SCC) hosted its annual Viking Crucible training event, an intensive, hands-on simulation designed to prepare healthcare students for the realities of emergency medical care. In collaboration with SCC’s Nursing and EMS programs, the event provided a full-scale, high-fidelity experience spanning both pre-hospital and hospital environments.
The training kicked off at 8:30 a.m. and ran until just before midnight, immersing students in high-stress scenarios that challenged their ability to perform advanced life support procedures in unpredictable settings. Participants were tasked with managing complex patient cases, applying critical thinking, and refining their clinical skills under pressure.

This year, SCC was honored to welcome the North Carolina National Guard, whose participation provided a unique perspective on patient management in military and mass casualty situations. Additionally, the event was supported by agency representatives from Cape Fear Valley Health, Johnston County EMS, Sampson County EMS, Bladen County EMS, Duplin County EMS, Onslow County EMS, Clinton Fire Department, and Taylors Bridge Fire Department.
“Interprofessional education is so important in the preparation of future healthcare professionals,” said Dr. Alexandria Apperson Croley, Dean of Healthcare at SCC. “Events like The Crucible help students develop communication and collaboration skills that can lead to a stronger healthcare system.”

“The Viking Crucible is a highlight of the year for our paramedic students,” said SCC Paramedic Instructor Thomas Newcomb. “It’s an opportunity for them to put their training to the test in an environment that mirrors the chaos and unpredictability of real-world emergencies. It’s a night of challenge, learning, and camaraderie.”
Sampson Community College remains committed to refining and expanding this program to ensure its graduates are well-prepared to serve their communities as highly skilled healthcare providers.

“I am thankful to work with faculty, staff, and students who are dedicated to advancing teamwork and patient-centered care efforts,” concluded Dr. Apperson Croley.
